So, Oppo, I'm in the process of remodeling my bedroom and I thought about getting a new bed (might have to be queen-size unless I can ditch my TV stand, VCR and other old electronics junk) from IKEA, mostly because I would like to keep things down low on the budget. Right now, I've been eyeing the MALM bed frame for weeks now and I may drive up to Seattle to actually consider the purchase. What say you, oppo? Any thoughts?

Not my kind of thing, but the design is clean so I like it.

Kinja'd!!!

Does Ikea have something like this?

The bed or the entire room?

The bed.

I'd have to check on site, but knowing the IKEA designers...

Ikea furniture is pretty crap. I have a lot of it right now but I'm pretty much treating it as disposable furniture. If you plan on keeping this for a while I'd look for something nicer.

The problem is, most of the furniture stores around here are waaaaay beyond my price range and I don't have a good credit score - partly because college and a library fee. And I don't have access to a truck as well as the fact that moving stuff up a narrow stairway is a fucking pain in the ass.

My wife and I have been using a Malm bed for maybe 5 years now. We like it and it seems to be holding up quite well even though it's been through multiple moves. Certainly won't be a family heirloom but I would be surprised if it doesn't last at least a couple more years.

I DD a full Malm when I'm at home. I have to say paired with the right mattress, you get a firm, yet very comfortable ride. Also, if you remove the box spring for added lightness, the laying position is optimal. Much lower COG, and allows you to react much quicker in emergency situations. Overall, very little maintenance, and the black finish can be corrected with a sharpie. I'd vote 9/10.

How did you set yours up, if you don't mind me asking? I was tempted to go with the slats as I don't know how I'm going to carry a box frame up a narrow staircase..

That's what we did. Slats. No box. Easier to set up and move. And we just though it looked cleaner that way.

He may well have. What I know about Swedish politics could well be written on the back of a stamp using large letters.

Interestingly calm and Malm don't really rhyme.

we bought a lot of ikea stuff about 7 years ago, Malm included. I think it ranks high among the rest of their stuff in quality. It's now relegated to guest duty, but only because we went with a king. Have you considered a cheapo steal frame from Sam's? It's not stylish, but does the job.

FYI, the matching ikea dressers are falling apart now after three moves. I don't recommend those.

tell you what. Ikea lately has kind of stepped up in furniture quality. Probably with laser cutting and CAD work making this fit a bit better than before. I have a kitchen table. Splits apart and the middle folds out to add that extra leaf in there to seat 6. It cost $300. It's solid and totally worth it especially since i have two youngins. The entertainment console is that 3 drawer low middle with the two bookshelves on the sides and the top middle bridge thing. Also have two other quite tall bookshelves downstairs. They all built up quite SOLID and I'm quite happy with that too. I wouldn't have a problem at all with a bed frame from them. We sold out thousand dollar table and got that on ein the kitchen because of kids and cats. Dont get nice stuff if you plan on moving a few times or have pets or drunk people.

No one in my family goes to Sam's or Costco nowadays, sadly.

Do Ikea still have funny sized beds and mattresses? Doesn't make too much difference as long as your current bedding fits, but if you want to replace the mattress in future it can be a bit limiting.

I'd expect you can find something local for a similar price and of similar quality. You could consider making your own bed, as well. I've always wanted to buy a bunch of scaffolding tubes and clamps and build one out of them. But wood's pretty easy, too.

Any used furniture stores or Goodwill/St. Vincent de Paul stores in your area?

I've seen bedframes from the cheap metal "Hollywood" ones (~$20-40) all the way up to handcarved log frames (~$150) at places like that.
